  • Battle Locations: Another random suggestion

So, in my last thread, Inquisitor Adaar mentioned possibly including a Darkspawn Forge type non-attacker to boost Blighted. That got me thinking about the specific locations in the game, and then the background scenes in which our HoDA teams fight. As far as I can tell, the fight location is pretty randomized, right? Would it be possible to add boosts to the setting themselves? This could add an additional both an additional bit of randomness and strategy to the battles. Randomness in that you never know where you'll fight next or who would be boosted, and strategy in that it will benefit you to have multiple varieties of teams at the ready for specific locations.

So for example, if you are randomly assigned a fight in the Brecilian Forest (which could boost Elves and Creatures), you may decide to use your Elven squad despite the fact that Tevinter are boosted for that event, just based on the location. You may also decide to skip over a Creature team, that normally would be an easy win, but is boosted by the Forest.

If I had to guess, this sort of change couldn't be made without a client update, but I hope it wouldn't be too difficult to add aside from that. It could even be simplified--instead of specific locations, we could just have Cities (boost humans of all nations), Forests (elves and beasts), Oceans (Qunari), Undergound/Deep Roads (blight and Dwarves), and the Fade (demons and spirits).

As far as a general idea, what do you think? Even though it's a long shot, it's still fun to speculate ^_^

What a really cool idea! You're right, it would take a client update for it, but I can't say how "difficult" it would be at this juncture as just a theoretical. We'll have to think about it and see whether it's something even possible.

Edit: Actually the more my brain mulls it over, this may not even require a client update.

    Hmm... ponder ponder ponder.

Is this something you would want to see in both PVP and PVE? For PVP, would this be both Proving Grounds and the Events?

The biggest downside I can see to this would be trying to Defend properly - since you don't know which environment you'll be in, it makes it difficult to put out an appropriate defense squad, since the bonuses would then be totally unpredictable.

My first thought when I saw this thread was that this was going to bring out the RNG vs Strategy debaters with strong opinions on both sides.

I thought about what sort of fights it would apply to. I think that PvE would make the most sense, but would have less of an impact. I agree that including something like this in PG would add another challenge to defending. Do you think it would be possible to add this to the weekly PvP events but exclude PG? My gut says probably not... I like the idea of adding a new dynamic to the limited events, but adding something that could greatly effect PG gives me pause.

Even if it only appeared in PvE and quest maps, I think it could be a fun feature! And maybe if the response is positive, it could then be expanded to PvP.

Kidnova I agree, and I wanted to hear what people would think. My hope is that by hearing a couple of perspectives the idea could be molded into something that created a good balance of additional strategy AND randomness. We'll see!

Interesting idea. I suppose you could curtail the randomness aspect in PvP by making the bonus something fairly minor, say 10-20%, then it shouldn't override good team composition but potentially adds an interesting edge to the proceedings.

An accompanying idea is to add a bonus to the end rewards (XP, gold, banners) if you triumph over a group that does receive the boost but yours doesn't. A bit of risk/reward.

Yup, I never really thought it should have a huge impact. +20% happens to be the number I had in mind, and I figured it would apply after auras, but before runes (though I'm not really sure of the ordering).

And I REALLY like the idea of adding bonus rewards, even if the group-boost isn't something that happens at this time!

                Initially...

It's an interesting idea. I think this sounds like a new game mode to me.
It's sort of a roulette mode to it all.
And whether you think it would be for all areas or just PVP... hmmm.. not sure what others wish for... for myself I would like it in a PVP event. Even to mix up guild wars would be interesting.

The other part is.. are the environmental boosts something easily known ? So in your example.. in PVP... Tevinter boosted event.. but you start against an opponent in a brecillian forest environment... Will there be somewhere on screen that tells me what boosts are given to elves and creatures?

                Thanks~!
... and then there's MARYDEN (the forgotten ONE).

We have 8 cells for making different teams. To play in different areas. And I think if you do not make bonuses too strong, then there will not be any special problems.

I really like the idea, something that takes some thought about it for sure!

In my opinion it'd be great to have it in PvP Events but not for the Tags already boosted in the event itself, sure thing that a minor boost (like 10 or 20%) to so called "Counter factions" would add quite some spice to our weekly schedules, making it more various, by making us have a wider choice pool, but this is just an idea of mine.

Taking the idea itself (so not considering what I "suggested" above), I find that defending in PG, with this randomized map bonus feature, would be a bit too hard and sure wouldn't be an optimal thing as it adds more RNG to what is supposed to be a Strategic Game and where we take a risk already sometimes during the fight itself (have you ever been wiped by a WCC because of a round where she managed to survive? for example eh). Despite this it'd be really cool to have it in PvE nexuses and, why not, in the gauntlet itself but with pre set stages that would help the player instead of the Gauntlet opponents (it'd be a small boost, but still useful).
Sure thing for me is that this is a great suggestion that deserve a chance if well planned, as it would add some variety but requires quite some tought about it.

My main worry is Defense, since those are fixed slots. You can't predict which environment you'd be in, so Defense could alter pretty widely, even with small bonuses.

I'm not so sure applying this to PVE would really make much difference - at least not in the Quests. We specifically assign backgrounds to each quest event, and that applies to every node within the event. At that point, we would just add the relevant game changer to the quest itself and have the same effect. So the only real place this could be used is in PVP, where the backgrounds are randomized.

Thanks for the feedback, I'm glad that others feel positively about the idea!
Therealpill Cosby Since I'm mean, I didn't imagine that it would display anywhere on the screen, but would pop up like the faction bonuses to, something like "Location Bonus", and then highlight the effected toon. Buuuuut I guess it would be good to be nice (this time...), and maybe we could see it on the left side of the screen beneath the rune slots: a banner/pennant that says "+20% h/p:" and then a column of effected groups beneath. Could also be put in the "more info" screen, so as to not clutter the main battle screen too much.

But still thinking about PG... Lyeshal is there a way to remove the randomized backgrounds from the PvP battle? Or choose just one? If so, all of the PG battles could take place in a "neutral" environment, one that is included in the standard environment circulation, but is set permanently as the backdrop for PG. I know that when you're "nexting" between fights the backdrop doesn't change, so maybe it can be built off of that...?

Yeah we could make it a fixed background, but it would probably be just as easy for us to make it apply to PVP Events only and not PG. However, that doesn't solve the issue of the Defense squad on PVP Events.

Not sure about the visual display stuff - that would require a client update at that point, especially if details are to be displayed. I'm still worried about those Defense slots.

We do have players stating that the game has gotten very complicated as it is, and this would be adding another complexity layer. I do like the idea, but the more I think on it for the details of it, the more I wonder whether it would be more frustrating than fun, and whether the effort would be worth it. Since it wouldn't need to apply to PVE (or rather, we can already do this to PVE through the existing game-changers stuff), and we're already talking about ways to make it not apply to Proving Grounds, that leaves PVP Events, where we still have concerns for it.

BTW, this is pretty standard Design process stuff - welcome to a glimpse into our world Someone pitches a fun idea, it sounds really great at first, and then holes start getting poked all over it. Not saying this is off the table, but it does need a fair amount of thought before it could become a reality, if at all.

Heh, no that's fair, I totally understand! Like I said earlier, I really like Skywalkered's idea about offering reward bonuses based on the environment. Maybe a less intrusive way to have the backgrounds play a role could be to offer bonuses to gold, XP, and/or banners (or maybe something else? I'm not sure if anything can be offered as PvP rewards) for using the affiliated units. Still doesn't effect the battle itself, but you may decide to use your Elf team to get those few bonus banners instead of your Vints.

Should you have already been issued warnings and continue to break the rules, you will be issued an infraction - your posting privileges will be disabled for three days, but you will still be able to view the forums as a guest.

For persistent and deliberate rule-breakers your account will be "Banned". That means you are no longer welcome on these forums and/or games and your account will no longer function in them. If you re-register, your new account will be banned as well.

                              Posting Suggestions
In the attempt to create a compromise where everyone is happy, the following suggestions are also recommended:

                              1. Be civil and courteous. This forum is visited by people from all over the world, of different ages, genders, religions, and backgrounds, and are each entitled to their own opinion.
Also, see Flaming, Right to Privacy, and Hatred.

                              2. Make sure that your message topics fit the topic description of the forum in which you are posting. This is for your own benefit - for example, a question regarding a bug or problem should be posted in the Feedback section.

                              3. Use the search function before posting, particularly if the question is problem oriented. Most technical questions have been answered before, and solutions are freely available.

                              4. Make sure that you have followed #3 before posting

                              5. Read the sticky threads at the top of each forum - they are there for a reason, and generally contain information relevant to the forum.

                              6. Don't quote the entire message that you're responding to, only the pertinent passage. This makes it easier to read for other users.

                              7. If you find it easier to express yourself en français, auf Deutsch, en español, in Nederlands, in Italiano, or any other language, post in the International Discussion forum. Hopefully someone who speaks the same language as you will be able to assist you. All posts in other sections (non-International) of the forums must be in English, so please make use of Google Translate if you need assistance with translation. Posting in English will allow the widest range of people to assist you.
