  • Placing blame for a "nerf"

Hey all. I've had some time to think about a few things and I wanted to post my thoughts.

    - We've had our newest member of the Red Lyrium group for almost a week now, and Bart is pretty good.
    - It took awhile for the Meredith Keys to really catch on, and as that happened more and more, news of the interaction between this gear and assassinations reached the masses.

The assassination/key mechanic really reached a fever pitch in some forward testing, post-release, (by some of the games good strategists) with Carver paired with Eva or any of the Ferelden Templars. Assassination was a pretty unique aura in the game - it could completely shift the tide of any given battle, yet was such an outside chance that it could not be relied upon. This all changed with Carver, sporting a healthy 50% chance to trigger the kill.

I can understand that even in pre-release testing a cross checking of gears and attack mechanics like this could go unnoticed. But then we come to the root of the issue here. It was noticed, eventually. We have proof of this in other threads. And when that happened, CG had already, I'm guessing, had the designs drawn up for RL Bart. Which was a mistake to begin with. If nobody in pre-release testing would have thought to pair Carver with any of his Ferelden Templar brethren, they surely would have done so with RL Bart - after all the Red Templar make up a majority of the RL group. We can't know what happened, or if any discussions took place, but a decision was made to go forward with the release of this new toon knowing it would create the imbalance that it did when you pair 4 hard hitting quicks with a 30% chance to assassinate with one of these keys. I cannot fathom what goes on behind closed doors that pushes a company to allow a release that they know will force a future nerf. Is this revenue-driven behavior? Don't hint at the problem you are introducing until after you've exhausted the income stream from the release, then issue the nerf, and a small compensation package (maybe) that does not come close to the $ amount generated.

People have said "You will enjoy 3-4 months of event and PG rewards before this pending nerf "hits the shelves", so it's a fair return". Is it? Maybe for the individual player it is - but for CG, this cycle of release, income, nerf, is nothing but a cash cow. They are giving the PG/event rewards away, every time, regardless of whether they go to squads running soon-to-be-nerfed toons or not. Is this why it happens?

Who pre-release tested the revamped 2* Sera? Surely somebody would have seen the imbalance that created, and could have averted it. But it was allowed to happen. Income was generated from it, and then eventually it was brought back in to check. And the entire landscape was left as-is for long enough, to pull every possible dollar maybe???, that by the time the nerf happened there were many very reliable counters.

Let's think for a moment - you cannot simply measure income generated by a revamp like 2* Sera by only the money spent to acquire and build and fort and gear toons like this. Think about the life it breathes into the game. The sheer activity it generates. It's marketing 101. Get them in the door on one good deal and sell them everything but the kitchen sink while they're here.

I'm not saying nerfing the key/assassination interaction is right or wrong.
I'm not saying halving Sera's buff was right or wrong.
What I'm saying is a company that knowingly releases dynamics that they know will have to be reverted, or reigned in, at a future point, is what is wrong.

I know CG is going to vehemently deny ever realizing the ramifications of such releases, and they never know at the time of a release that the release is going to command a future nerf - but I don't think I buy into it. They knew what they were releasing and did it anyways, or else they didn't know what they were doing, and is that really a sound defense???

I'd love to hear some thoughts.

You may speculate all you like, but you do not have all of the information and you are not entitled to that information.

We have said before, though, we plan releases several months in advance, and occasionally mechanics that interact with each other in extra powerful ways do slip through, unintentionally. When it is found to be imbalanced, we will fix it.

To state that this is some kind of underhanded or malicious behavior on our part, however, is frankly wrong and misguided. Do not presume you know what is going on behind the scenes here.

Also, see Flaming, Right to Privacy, and Hatred.

        2. Make sure that your message topics fit the topic description of the forum in which you are posting. This is for your own benefit - for example, a question regarding a bug or problem should be posted in the Feedback section.

        3. Use the search function before posting, particularly if the question is problem oriented. Most technical questions have been answered before, and solutions are freely available.

        4. Make sure that you have followed #3 before posting

        5. Read the sticky threads at the top of each forum - they are there for a reason, and generally contain information relevant to the forum.

        6. Don't quote the entire message that you're responding to, only the pertinent passage. This makes it easier to read for other users.

        7. If you find it easier to express yourself en français, auf Deutsch, en español, in Nederlands, in Italiano, or any other language, post in the International Discussion forum. Hopefully someone who speaks the same language as you will be able to assist you. All posts in other sections (non-International) of the forums must be in English, so please make use of Google Translate if you need assistance with translation.
