  • PVP: Player vs. Player - an Entry Level Guide

Welcome to Thedas! If you'd like some explanation of the game and all it contains.. (Click Here)

Rule number 1 in PVP: On any given day, any team can win. The RNG governs all (Random Number Generator) , and is "designed" to level the playing field. (Opinions vary on that.)

Rule number 2 in PVP: If you get mad because you lose, or can't stand losing and will rage on and on, on the forums. Forget PVP. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. "C'est la vie"

    What is PVP?

PVP, or Player vs. Player, is where you can test your team against other players teams, and compete for rewards.

What do I need for PVP (besides a squad)?
    • Stamina: 1 unit per battle (upper right bar with purple bottle/flask/thing)
    • Recharge time on Stamina(1 unit): 21 mins
    • Total time to recharge fully (6 units): 2 Hours 6 minutes
What if I don't want to wait for the recharge?
    • Instant refill w/Gems: If you do not want to wait for the normal refill, you can use 3 gems to obtain a full refill (6 units) of your stamina bar. Choose wisely, the amount of gems invested should be weighed carefully against the size of the reward. (More on Gem usage)
How do I start in PVP?
    • Choosing a Squad: Choosing a squad to compete with is important. But you're at the mercy of what you have available. Don't worry, you can bolster your teams with runes (more on this here). Try using your highest level heroes, with the most versatile builds. OR, slots permitting, setup as many teams as possible, try them out against various opponents.
Tip: It is worth mentioning that even if a PvP match is too difficult given the squad the player already has, if they do win at least one fight, with nexting they'll eventually find a weak/single unit, they'll be ranked and will get an award of some sort when the event ends.
    • Choosing a Defending Squad: Slot number 1 (With the Shield) is your defending squad slot. Here you can place the team you think will best defend your camp.
Note: Some place a weak team here to make it easier for others To advance. This is up to you, there is no hard and fast rule about what type of squad you use to defend your camp.

What types of PVP are there?

PVP Events: (Sample of Event Screen)

What is an Event Buff? Event buffs are there to enhance specific heroes in certain groups, or factions, type (Common, Uncommon, Rare, Epic, Legendary) with certain abilities, heritage, classes, country of origin, or whatever else they can think of as time goes by. Think of it like poker, "Deuces are wild, jacks or better to open" XD Event buffs can sometimes stack. In a recent event, Grey wardens received one buff to health and power, and dwarves another. Grey Warden Dwarves received both! The combinations are too many to list here, but you should be getting the idea now. (Event Stats Calculator)

What is a Wildcard? Wild Cards are a special buff that only effects a specific hero, or two, or three. It can buff their health, or power, or both.

What can I win? (Example of recent rewards)
    • Ladder rewards: Runes, Wisps, Heroes, (Common, Rare, Epic, Legendary, Ultra Legendary), Gold, XP, Gems
    • Ladder top rewards: Runes, Wisps, Heroes, ( Epic, Legendary, Ultra Legendary), Gems, Special Packs.
    • Final Ranking rewards: Wisps, Heroes, (Common, Rare, Epic, Legendary) , Gold, Gems, Special Packs.
    Pvp Battles:

    What can I win?
    • Ladder rewards: Gold, Trophies, Achievements (Gold & Gems)
    • Ladder top rewards: N/A
    • Ranking rewards: Distributed weekly, Gems
Why choose battles over events? PVP Battles is a good testing ground for your teams, especially since there is no event buff to deal with. You can earn gold while practicing and even progress to completing "Achievements" and receive Gold/Gems as a reward. Once a week, the top ranked players receive a gem payout, and the final hours can be very exciting. All in all, it's not a bad deal.

What about the NON Event PVP Bonuses?
    • What is a Faction Bonus? The Faction Bonus varies depending on the rarity of the units in the faction. For each Legendary, it adds 5%, each Epic is 4%, each Rare is 3%, Uncommon is 2% and Common is 1%. So if you have 4 Legendaries, it is a 20% bonus, but a squad with 2 Legendaries and 2 Epics would be 18%.
    • What is a Row Bonus? The Row Bonus is independent of Faction. Any unit in the Front Row gets a 50% bonus to Health, and any unit in the Back Row gets a X% bonus to their Critical Chance.

    What is gem farming?
    • Definition/Purpose: Strictly speaking, it is as it sounds. Farming for gems. Some players use natural refills (refills that occur over time) to climb the ladder to obtain tier rewards, specifically gems. They have little or no intention of ranking, they just need more gems. Many do it, and it's perfectly fine to.
Do I need to finish the ladder, etc.. every time?
    • Short Answer: No.
    • Long Answer: While the desire may be there, your teams, and more importantly, your time and/or gem count may not permit it. Simply play as you wish and enjoy the challenge!

Special thanks to these kind folks, for their contributions and checking my facts.. Or supplying them due to a lack thereof.. lol:

One thing I have not been able to figure out (or find using search in this forum) is how the server figures out what opposing squads to present when hitting Next. I've noticed, for example, on the current PVP challenge, that when my ranking is low, I get plenty of opposing squads I can beat, but being that I wish to achieve a Top 200 finish, I've been burning gems to continuously fight, and as I scale upwards up the rankings, the opposing squads that are presented to me are increasingly harder and harder. I'm at the point in the current PVP challenge where once I hit the Top 50, it becomes nothing but a giant Next-fest! I understand the rationale, and am totally in support of this (the better the performance, the more challenging it really should be), but I am curious how the game engine determines what opposing players to present you. Being that I can hardly break past rank of about 45, I consider this event particularly challenging for me/my small portfolio of heroes; there have been recent events this past couple of weeks where the only thing keeping me from being Top 25 was my reluctance to burn gems/perception of poor value of top tier prize versus gem cost to win.

Ed, if I'm understanding you question correctly this is what happens. Whatever your current rank is in the pvp event the system pairs you to battle with other who are within 500 (i don't know the exact number, 500 is just an example) ranks up or down of you. So early on those could be the lower player level people who don't have the squads to get high ranks. As you rank up and get to the top 100 those are usually people who have really good teams (as you've seen) and are trying to get a high rank also. That means they put up a good defense team in slot one so people will be less likely to attack them and in theory give them a better chance to get more banners faster. Does that make sense and answer your question?

Makes sense. I wasn't sure if it simply looked at Banner count, or if it was some other mechanic (squad power comparison or something else). Banner count likely makes the most sense because everyone can have up to four squads, so how would the engine know what to compare?

Newbies will level up every time they turn around. Refreshing energy and stamina like a whale. I hit the PVP events like crazy starting on day one. You can pull a bunch of legendaries as prizes if you are willing to keep hitting that next button and start when you have free time. I was almost dreading the level ups after a while.

What should I do if I see objectionable material on the forums?
It is important that members recognize the real-time nature of this forum: the moderators cannot always monitor the contents of posted messages, and as such depend upon you to inform them when participants or their messages are violating our policy as stated here. At best, your post will be edited by one of the moderators and you will be issued a warning. If the offense is more serious your post will be deleted. Posting "why was my post edited/deleted?" etc. will only make matters worse, so please don't. If a moderator has not sent you a message stating why, please send the Lead Moderator a message asking for a reason.

Should you have already been issued warnings and continue to break the rules, you will be issued an infraction - your posting privileges will be disabled for three days, but you will still be able to view the forums as a guest.

For persistent and deliberate rule-breakers your account will be "Banned". That means you are no longer welcome on these forums and/or games and your account will no longer function in them. If you re-register, your new account will be banned as well.

            Posting Suggestions
In the attempt to create a compromise where everyone is happy, the following suggestions are also recommended:

            1. Be civil and courteous. This forum is visited by people from all over the world, of different ages, genders, religions, and backgrounds, and are each entitled to their own opinion. Keep in mind that in most cases, posts are not intended to offend. If you find yourself taking offense at a post, take a step back and contact the person directly, or appeal to a moderator for arbitration. Don't make the situation worse by posting in anger and lashing out at the original poster. Also, see Flaming, Right to Privacy, and Hatred.

            2. Make sure that your message topics fit the topic description of the forum in which you are posting. This is for your own benefit - for example, a question regarding a bug or problem should be posted in the Feedback section under the appropriate heading.

            3. Use the search function before posting, particularly if the question is problem oriented. Most technical questions have been answered before, and solutions are freely available. Additionally, before posting a bug, check the Known Issues thread to quickly see if the staff is already aware, and to find the discussion thread about that issue.

            4. Make sure that you have followed #3 before posting

            5. Read the sticky threads at the top of each forum - they are there for a reason, and generally contain information relevant to the forum and/or game.

            6. Don't quote the entire message that you're responding to, only the pertinent passage. This makes it easier to read for other users.

            7. If you find it easier to express yourself en français, auf Deutsch, en español, in Nederlands, in Italiano, or any other language, post in the International Discussion forum. Hopefully someone who speaks the same language as you will be able to assist you. All posts in other sections (non-International) of the forums must be in English, so please make use of Google Translate if you need assistance with translation. Posting in English will allow the widest range of people to assist you.

In addition to the Forum Rules, you are bound to the general EA Terms of Service both on these forums and in the game. Links to the TOS are as follows:

            EA TOS English
            EA TOS French
            EA TOS German
            EA TOS Russian
            EA TOS Spanish

By registering and posting on these forums, you agree to be bound to the rules and disciplinary actions set forth above.
